In the course of a
fairly brief-about 40 minutes-videotaped interview my dad made references to a great deal of
literature. This is a list of the works he referred to.
The plays of William Shakespeare
The Bobshill Boys (This would seem
to be a series of childrens' books from the early 1900's, but I have not
been able to find any information about them)
Little Journey's to the Homes of
the Great by Elbert Hubbard
Plutarch's Lives
The Harvard Classics (This is
a fifty volume set of books containing selections from the literature
of the world. It was edited by Charles W. Elliot, President Emeritus of
Harvard University. The original idea for the set stems from a remark by
Eliot:"All the books needed for a real education could be set on a
shelf five feet long." From this remark and its physical makeup, the set
is known as "the Five Foot Shelf".)
The Rise of Great American Fortunesby Gustavus Myers
The writings of Sigmund Freud
The writings of Aaron Brill
The writings of Carl Jung
Andrei Treeden (?)
The Wealth of Nations by
Adam Smith
The essays of Sir William Petty
The plays and essays of Count Leon Tolstoy
The Plays of George Bernard Shaw
The plays of Christopher Marlowe
The works of Mark Twain
The Amenities of Book Collecting
